Copy Editing
Copy editing is similar to proof reading, but it is different. Don’t worry too much if you are not sure which service you are asking for, we can work that out at consultation stage, which you can book here.
Technically, however, copy editing tends to happen a little earlier in the process, compared to proof reading.
Copy editing
- Focus: Copy editing is a deeper review of the text. It focuses on improving clarity, style, and readability, while also correcting language errors. Copy editors not only address issues like grammar, punctuation, and spelling but also ensure that the text follows the appropriate style guide (house style or standard like APA, MLA, etc.) and is internally consistent in tone, voice, and flow.
- Scope: Copy editing can involve rewriting awkward sentences, improving word choice, and suggesting structural changes to paragraphs or sections for better coherence. It may also include fact-checking and ensuring that references or citations are correct.
- Timing: Copy editing typically happens earlier in the editorial process, after the writer has completed the draft but before layout or design work has started. This is a more intensive and collaborative process than proofreading.
- Technical Focus: In addition to the tasks covered by proofreading, copy editing deals with:
- Sentence structure and flow
- Consistency in tone, style, and voice
- Correcting usage errors (e.g., misuse of tense or word choice)
- Checking for coherence and logical progression of ideas
- Ensuring adherence to style guides (capitalization, abbreviations, citation formats)
Therefore, copy editing is a slightly more involved process and attracts a slightly higher pricetag.
